Ivybridge Hit Seven To Win Intermediate Cup

A strong performance from Ivybridge Town saw them win the A&S Paving Devon Intermediate Cup Final on Saturday

A & S Paving Devon Intermediate Cup Final

Ivybridge Town 3rds 7 v 2 St Thomas Social Club

Played at Coach Road, Newton Abbot 14/05/2022

St Thomas kicked off on this warm afternoon at Coach Road and put pressure on the  Ivybridge back line, David Wilkes getting the first corner of the match in the 3rd minute. The Ivy’s keeper M Parnowski punched the ball clear, but it was returned with interest by R Carstairs whose shot was headed off the line by S Jones. They didn’t have to wait long to open the scoring as on 5 minutes a cross in from Wilkes on the left found Sam Hagger who made no mistake with his header into the far corner.

One nil to St Thomas and with 4 minutes they had their second goal, a corner swung into the six yard area being diverted past Ivybridge custodian M Parnowski by a defender for an own goal.

All to do for Ivybridge now as they try to regroup, and regroup they did as, on 29 minutes, a defence splitting pass from the back landed at the feet of Matt Goodwin who slotted past Pengilly in the St Thomas goal to bring his side back into the game. On 42 minutes they were level as a cross in from the right found Karl Foster, unmarked 8 yards out, and he lashed home the equaliser into the far corner. 2 – 2 now with half time on the horizon.

The second half started with St Thomas on the attack, but they were easily pushed back by a well drilled Ivybridge back four who were having as much influence in the attacking sense as they were in defending. Few chances were being created by either team until just past the hour, on 63 minutes, when Ivybridge completed their come back. Luke Dickson, given the freedom of the left flank sent a low cross into Harley Battle who volleyed home with aplomb.

St Thomas were unfortunate not to equalise on 66 minutes when Wilkes turned just outside the penalty area and hit a firm drive that came back off the crossbar. Ivybridge were then forced to defend as St Thomas searched for a way back. The heat was taking it’s toll and players were starting to cramp up and in the 75th minute, just at a time when St Thomas were down to ten, Ivybridge got their fourth. Craig Brenton getting on the end of a cross from the left to pass the ball into the far corner of Pengilly’s net.

On 85 minutes Brenton got his second and his teams fifth, chasing onto a through ball and chipping it past Pengilly.

In the first minute of added time both teams managed to hit the woodwork and, although down a man in the sin bin, St Thomas were still not about to give up the fight. However, their overworked defence had started to lose its shape and Ivybridge capitalised with two more goals in the 6th and 7th minutes of added time. The sixth from Ben Endean who raced onto a through ball from Goodwin and the seventh and final goal from Charlie Glanville who robbed a tired defender to roll the ball past Pengilly from the edge of the box.
