Grenville Come Back To Stun SB Late On

A late goal from Matthew Mould saw Grenville edge past Signal Box Oak Villa

Stitch 3 Sixty Devon Sunday Supplementary Cup Final

Grenville FC 3 v 2 Signal Box Oak Villa Sunday 2nds

Played at Coach Road, Newton Abbot 23/08/2020

Second half strikes from Mikey Storey and Matthew Mould were enough to turn this game on its head, ensuring that Grenville took the honours in this final against their local rivals from the Plymouth and West Devon Sunday league, the match being held over from March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Grenville seemed to make most of the early running, and it was no surprise when Alex Photiou gave them the lead in the 10th minute, pouncing on a loose ball to fire his shot across Brice Shields, in the Signal Box goal, into the far corner. SB had a great chance to equalise when Jay Smith was put through into the box but smashed his shot against the crossbar.

SB were doing all the pressing now but were unable to break down a resolute Grenville defence until the 30th minute, Nicholas Cotton getting on the end of a five man move to smash the final cross into the roof of the Grenville net.

Grenville started to take control of the midfield and created two good chances from corner kicks which came to naught. In the 36th minute Photiou fired in a shot from just outside the box scraping the crossbar as it went out of play, but that was as good as it got as the half ended with the score standing at 1-1.

Within two minutes of the restart SB went ahead when Jay Smith got on the end of a through ball from Jonny Varcoe to slot home from close range.

In the 52nd minute the scores were levelled up again as Storey raced into the box, went around Shields to slot into the empty net.

The game had started to open up and Grenville’s Lloyd Russell had a good chance charged down before a raft of free kicks seemed to take the sting out of the game.

SB started to take control flooding the midfield but the final ball into the box seemed to be lacking accuracy as, despite their best endeavours, very few chances were being created.

Both teams were visibly tiring and struggling to hold the ball up on the 3G surface until the 86th minute when Grenville went ahead, Mould lobbing his shot over Shields from the edge of the box. 3 – 2 to and with 4 minutes left plus the 2 minutes of added time Grenville were able to see out the game without further alarm to deservedly take the 2019/2020 Sunday Supplementary Cup.
