Pro Direct Festival of Football 2017 A Huge Success

August bank holiday saw Devon FA host the Pro-Direct Festival of Football at Coach Road in Newton Abbot

Attracting 42 teams and over 450 players to participate in the annual curtain-raiser for the new season. Over the course of the weekend, money was raised for Devon FA’s brand new charity partner for 2017/18; Living Options. All proceeds from the tournament were donated, totalling over £860.

Thank you to Pro-Direct who worked in partnership with Devon FA for this year’s event to generously donate some footballs which were used as part of a giveaway to every team who entered the festival. The event was also chosen as an FA Community Football Day by McDonald’s, who kindly gave us some footballs and bibs to use at the event.

The festival kicked off on Saturday 26th August with the Under 11 9v9 tournament. Eight teams took part, split into two groups with the top two teams progressing into the semi-final stages. SB Frankfort were the worthy winners of Group A but were beaten by Saints Southwest 3-0 in semi-final one. The second semi-final saw Select Soccer, who finished as runners up in Group A defeat Central 3-1. The two group runners up faced each other in the final, but it was Saints Southwest who saved their best performance until last with a dominant 3-0 victory. Central United were the deserved winners of the Under 11 RESPECT award after all officials and tournament staff agreed that their players and coaches demonstrated fantastic sporting behaviour throughout all of their fixtures.

The Under 12 competition followed the same format, with two teams progressing to the semi-finals from each group. MAP Juniors and Saints Southwest were the two group winners, advancing alongside AFC Plympton and Elm United who finished as runners up in group A and B respectively. AFC Plympton saw off a strong MAP Juniors side 1-0 in semi-final one with a well taken finish and Saints Southwest scored two great goals as they defeated the Under 12 RESPECT winners Elm United. The final was a cagey affair with both sides anxious to secure to victory, with the game ending 0-0. AFC Plympton were eventually crowned the Under 12 victors after a long shootout which ended 8-7.

On Sunday 27th August it was the turn of the two 7v7 competitions. The Under 9 event attracted twelve teams, who were split into two groups. MAP Juniors were in scintillating goal scoring form, winning group A ahead of Kingsteinton on goal difference. Exeter Panthers were also in fine form in the group stage as they pipped Select Soccer to 1st place. MAP Juniors won their semi-final against Select 4-0, with Group B leaders Exeter defeating Kingsteinton on penalties after both sides failing to break down the opposition’s defence in the semi-final. The final saw another close encounter and after a 1-1 draw, Exeter Panthers claimed the Under 9 crown with the penalty shootout triumph. The RESPECT prize was deservedly awarded to Select Soccer.

The final tournament of the weekend saw fifteen Under 10 teams grace the Coach Road turf; separated into four groups with the top two from each advancing to the quarter-finals. Select Soccer, Horrabridge, MAP Juniors and Saints Southwest were the winners of their respective groups; Plymouth Marjon, Elburton Villa, Drake and Heavitree Youth claiming the runners up spots. Two of the quarter finals ended in draws with shootout victories for Horrabridge and Elburton Villa, whilst Select Soccer defeated Heavitree Youth 3-0 and Saints Southwest claimed a 3-1 win against Plymouth Marjon. Both semi-finals ended 1-0 with Elburton Villa and Horrabridge seeing off Saints Southwest and Select Soccer respectively. Fremington Youth were rightly awarded the RESPECT award, not only displaying magnificent sporting behaviour during all of their fixtures but were also happy to lend a hand to our staff with clearing the pitches. In the final game of the 2017 Pro-Direct Festival of Football, Elburton Villa narrowly defeated Horrabridge 1-0 to ensure that the winner’s trophy was heading home with them.

A big well done to all 42 teams for participating in this year’s Pro-Direct Festival of Football and a massive thank you to all of the volunteers and officials for helping to ensure that the event was a success.
