South Dartmoor Academy Brush Past The Villa

12/05/2017 - Graddon Vending U14 Boys County Cup Final Match Report - Elburton Villa 1 - 3 South Dartmoor Academy - Coach Road, Newton Abbot

This game pitched together the same two teams that contested last seasons under 13 final with the boys from Ashburton once again coming out on top.

There was no disguising their intention to impose themselves on this game as the South Dartmoor team pressed straight from the kick off, Oscar Bowerman firing a cross-shot just wide.

Within a minute South Dartmoor were ahead as William Bateman powered his first time shot home from a Bowerman cross, giving Jacob Shelley in the Elburton goal no chance. The lead was short lived however, as Elburton equalised straight from the restart, Luka beating the South Dartmoor custodian, Callum Wood, to a through ball and slotting into an empty net.

Following this early flurry of activity South Dartmoor got on top and almost went ahead in the 11th minute when a 20-yard left foot free kick from Alfie Tucker just cleared the bar. A minute later Bateman hit the post with his header when a cross from the left found him unmarked at the far post. In the 19th minute it was Bateman again, this time forcing a good save from Shelley diving to his left.

South Dartmoor were not to be denied and took the lead again in the 20th minute Ryan White scoring with a powerful drive from a Bowerman cross. Four minutes later it was 3 – 1 as Samuel Stapleton strode forward and powered a 25-yard shot through Shelley’s hands into the top corner.

Elburton fought back and in the 31st minute almost halved the deficit, a well struck free kick from Fletcher Hurrell just evading Wood’s right hand post. Wood was brought into action again in the 33rd minute as a he was tested by a well struck shot from Ben Smith, who had got free of a South Dartmoor defence that seemed to lose concentration as the half came to a close.

He did well then but floundered a minute later when he missed a cross from the right and as the bobbled across goal Elburton were unlucky not to capitalise from the ensuing melee, going in at half-time still two goals down.

In complete contrast to the first half, the second got off to a very slow start with little action at either end. Elburton’s 41 goal striker, Pkhakadze, found himself isolated up front as South Dartmoor sought to close out the game and came back deeper in search of the ball but to no avail.

The first real chance of the half came 12 minutes in when Bateman drew a good save from Shelley, diving to his left to turn the ball around the post for a corner.

That, and a raft of substitutions, seemed to spur Elburton into life and they got on top for the first time in the match. A free kick from Smith in the 51st minute, given for a bad foul on Pkhakadze, almost deceived Wood and in the closing stages it was all Elburton but a second goal, that would have brought them back into the match, eluded them.

With five minutes left Hurrell fired just over from the edge of the box and a minute later Wood saved well from Pkhakadze. In the last minute substitute Darren Cochrane, on for Pkhakadze, headed over from close range and South Dartmoor were relieved to hear the final whistle.

Despite their best efforts Elburton had been unable to break down a resolute South Dartmoor defence and, for the second year running, could only watch as their opposition were presented with the cup by Dave Graddon of Graddon Vending, who sponsored the competition.
