On Thursday 10th May, Devon FA hosted the Sportslighting U13 Girls County Cup Final at Coach Road between Budleigh Salterton Youth and Ivybridge Town Youth.

Two teams from different areas of the County made the trip to County HQ with the notion of representing girls youth football and looking to take the trophy back to their home town.

Ivybridge had already won their league title, so it was them who were slight favourites going into the game.

The match started and both sides were a bit cagey, Ivybridge probed the Budleigh defence but they stood firm.

Ivybridge broke away not long after, with the lively, Libby Gimson who had a snap shot at goal, but it was well blocked by Budleigh’s Amy Leadbeater.

After thirteen minutes Gimson came very close to opening the scoring when she hit a shot from just inside the penalty area and smashed the ball against the cross bar – one of many shots which rattled the bar on the night.

Ivybridge were piling on the pressure and Gimson hit the bar again after a wonderful strike on goal thundered against the woodwork and bounce back to safety. The crowd were certainly being entertained by the players.

However, not long later, Gimson got herself on the scoresheet, she got her just rewards when she hit a cracking shot into the right-hand side of Budleigh’s goal – 1-0 to Ivybridge.

Even though the majority of the first half was all in favour of Ivybridge, it was credit to the Budleigh players who were determined to keep the Ivybridge attack at bay with some great tackles and blocks.

Yet, it was one of the start players of the match that made it 2-0 in the 28th minute, as Ellie Sara found space in the area and expertly composed herself to slot it into the bottom left-hand corner.

Ivybridge looked to be the dominant side and they breached the defence again with a neat finish by Ellie Sara in the thirty-first minute, making it 3-0, a carbon-copy of her first.

Two minutes later Libby Gimson completed a hat trick of close calls when she hit the bar for the third time in the first half.

The fourth official indicated that there would be two minutes of added time in it Budleigh mounted a rare attack but Ivybridge’s keeper Daisy Aylott-Loader saved well and at half time Ivybridge went in leading 3-0.

The second half looked to be a big half for Budleigh as they were effectively looking for a miracle to get themselves back into the game.

Budleigh started the half off on the front foot and had their best chance of the game three minutes in when a pass found Leadbeater free in the area but she was forced a little wide and her shot hit the side netting.

It was seemed to be a brilliant start from the girls in red, as Budleigh broke into the Ivybridge area again, as Poppy Avery hit a decent cross but it was well parried into touch by Aylott-Loader for a corner kick, however nothing materialised from the resulting corner kick.

Ivybridge looked to secure their dominance on the game and they hit the bar for the fourth time with a shot from the impressive Ellie Sara.

Moments later she got her just rewards, completing her hat trick with a brilliant glancing header in the sixty-first minute.

Ivybridge were back on top and they were playing good passing football but Budleigh battled hard and never gave up.

In the final minute of normal time Ivybridge broke into the Budleigh box with Gimson who fired a shot on goal but keeper Millie Hardman pulled off a fine save but she couldn’t hold onto the ball and Lucy Hack saw her chance and stroked home the follow up for Ivybridge’s fifth.

There would be four minutes of added time and in this Ivybridge hit the bar for the fifth time with a shot from Yvie Miller, not overly sure what the crossbar had done to deserve such a night.

The referee blew for full time seeing Ivybridge win the Sportslightng Devon U13 Girls County Cup Final 5-0.

Player of the Match: Libby Gimson.
