Premier League Primary Stars Futsal 2017

PL Primary Stars are the future, so have a read through what happened on a great day at Paignton Sports Academy.

Premier League Primary Stars uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire children to learn, be active and develop important life skills. Available to every primary school in England and Wales, it inspires girls and boys aged 5-11 in the classroom, the playground and on the sports field. Coaches at professional clubs work with teachers to deliver fun, educational sessions in a range of subjects within local partner schools.

As part of the celebration of the PL Primary Stars project, Devon Schools FA teamed up with the Community Trusts of Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City and Torquay United to deliver a Futsal event aimed at giving an opportunity for students to experience the increasingly popular sport. Devon Schools FA would like to thank the three clubs for all of their help with inviting schools to the competition and making sure the event ran smoothly, as well as providing enthusiastic volunteers to help with officiating the games.

The event this year, held at Paignton Community and Sports Academy, consisted of nine teams split into two groups; Galmpton (2), Woodford (2), Withycombe, Whipton Barton, Whitleigh, Wynstream and Curledge Street.

Galmpton United were the runaway winners in Group A, winning all four fixtures, whilst Woodford City claimed runners-up spot. Wynstream qualified for the semi-finals of the event winning the other group with Curledge Street taking second position.

Form from the group stages would have suggested that Galmpton United look set to continue their dominance, but a fantastic display by Curledge Street earned them a place in the final after a 2-1 victory after extra-time. In the other semi-final, extra-time was also needed to separate the two sides with Group B winners Wynstream beating Woodford City 3-2.

The final was a very tight encounter with both Curledge Street and Wynstream having opportunities to seal the victory. Neither side managed to take any chances during normal time, but Curledge Street claimed the trophy with a goal in extra-time to win the PL Primary Stars Futsal Cup.

Well done to all teams who participated. All fixtures were played in a fantastic sporting manner, with some great futsal on show!
