AS Paving Intermediate Cup Final Match Report

13/04/2017 - Chaddlewood Inn 0 - 3 Royal Oak - Played at Coach Road, Newton Abbot

Royal Oak from the Macron Devon and Exeter League ran out comfortable winners of this contest against their rivals Chaddlewood Inn from the Optimus PM Plymouth and West Devon League. With neither team having tasted defeat this season a close game was anticipated by in excess of 157 supporters who had travelled to Coach Road.

Chaddlewood were first onto the attack but it soon became clear that Royal Oak were the stronger of the two teams, playing at a high tempo throughout the ninety minutes; man of the match, Nathan May, being a particular thorn in Chaddlewood’s side. He outstripped his marker on numerous occasions and on another night, might easily have scored a hat trick. The fact that he didn’t was largely down to the efforts of Ross Tremlett, the Chaddlewood keeper, who pulled off a number of good saves to keep his side in the match.

Both teams seemed intent on keeping their defences tight and there were few chances created during the open quarter of the game save for a 12-yard volley over the Chaddlewood bar from Royal Oak’s Joe Wilson who had latched onto a poor headed clearance.

Encouraged by this Royal Oak started to put more pressure upon the opposition defence and took the lead in the 18th minute. Harry Choules slid a pass between two Chaddlewood defenders to Wilson who slotted past Tremlett with ease.

Royal Oak got the breakthrough they deserved and within 10 minutes should have been two up, Andrew Underhill shooting wide on the edge of the penalty area. However, he made no mistake in the 37th minute, as Royal Oak were awarded a free kick some 25 yards out on the left, lashing a right foot drive into the top corner that gave Tremlett no chance.

Five minutes later Tremlett was called upon to make two good saves, both from May who, with blistering pace, raced into the box to test the Chaddlewood keeper with left foot drives and the half ended with Oak leading by the two goals and wondering whether they might rue the missed opportunities.

After an even start to the second half Royal Oak started to get on top once more and on 61 minutes Underhill drew a brilliant save from Tremlett after intercepting May’s run along the edge of the Chaddlewood penalty area.

In the 65th minute Chaddlewood almost got one back as Danny Mason, who was working his socks off in the midfield, found Ryan Peck whose through ball found Joe Richardson unmarked on the edge of the box. Oaks keeper Danny Hoskins had had little to do but was alert enough to close down the space and Richardson shot straight at him.

The chance was gone, Royal Oak tightened up at the back and set about seeking a third goal that would surely win them the match.

Following much probing down the flanks the chance finally came in the 85th minute when May picked up a loose clearance just inside the Chaddlewood half and this time made no mistake. Using his pace, he completely outstripped the defence and drove in the Oaks third and final goal of the match from ten yards, giving Tremlett no chance.
