Respect is our direct response to the clear message from the grassroots game that standards of behaviour must improve, on and off-the-field and at all levels of the game.
We must address the abuse and intimidation of referees, which is causing thousands of them to drop out each season, and ensure that children and young people are able to enjoy playing football without unacceptable pressure from pushy parents and coaches.
This programme is not just about grassroots football. It’s about football at every level, which is why we’re glad to be working in partnership with the Premier League, Football League, Football Conference, Professional Footballers’ Association, League Managers’ Association and the Professional Game Match Officials to improve behaviour at the top end of the game too.
This isn’t a one-off initiative; it’s an evolving programme to support a huge culture change in football. Working together we can make sure football is played in a safe, positive environment for everyone – just as it should be.
Core Objectives of the Programme are;
- At all levels, football is played in a fair, safe and enjoyable environment – for players, officials, and supporters.
- Awareness & understanding of Respect is strong, right across the football family & public.
- On-field player conduct consistently reflects the principles of Respect - reflected in declining number of dissent cautions, player & manager misconduct.
- There is ‘zero-tolerance’ of abuse of or assault on referees - young people and adults are attracted to becoming a referee, & existing referees are retained.
- Professional Leagues, Clubs and players lead by example in promoting Respect.
