The Ships Tavern FC (formerly the Drakes Drum FC) approached this Cup match with an air of confidence, but still wary of their opposition. The previous weekend was a fixture nightmare with 3 games in just 4 days! Team Java was expected to field a changed team as players were unavailable due to holidays.
The match started slowly with both teams searching for an opening. A penalty was awarded to the Ship in the first 5 minutes as Rich Nicol was tripped whilst taking the ball around the keeper. Chris Maskell ensured an early lead with a well taken spot kick. A 25 yard volley made the score 2-0 after just 19 minutes.
After more heavy spells of pressure against Team Java, Ricky Hart fired home past the keeper. At 3-0 there seemed no way back for the home side. Their plight was only made worse after 31 minutes when Hart bagged his second passed the helpless keeper.
The second half saw Team Java turn to damage limitations with the defence strengthened. This frustrated the ship who found it difficult to create chances. Mike Burke took on the home defence with a great display of individual skill, his shot almost over the line, Ricky Hart found himself in a great supportive position and was able to finish it for his hatrick.
At 5 - 0 the game was well and truly won. After a determined and competitive display of football a much deserved shower and a pint was then had by all.
