South West Sports Senior Cup

Round 1

On the morning of the game, Martin Marshall failed a fitness test and could not take part in yesterday's win over South Molton.

The game kicked off at a frantic pace with South Molton going 1 up inside the first 60 seconds. Their lively forward was trying his luck from the kick off. This resulted in Sutts keeper, Ross Jowett, making a great save, allowing a corner to Molton. From the resulting corner, Sutts failed to clear and Molton took an early lead.

Sutts didn't let this get to them and pulled level with a goal from Right Back Lee Riley, skipping past two defenders to power a shot from 25 yards into the top corner. With Sutts now in control, Jason Grant put Sutts 2-1 up, latching on to a Lee Dennis through ball and slotting past the keeper.

Now with John Endacott and Mike Edecombe controlling the middle of the park, Sutts took a further lead going 3-1 up with a great goal from Lee Dennis. He beat his marker to power a shot into the corner of the net. With Molton playing some good football, Ross Jowett pulled of a great one on one stop to keep it at 3-1.

3-1 at half time and both sides were playing some great football on a very hard and difficult pitch.

After the break, Sutts again got behind the Molton defence with a pin point cross from Mark Hopkins meeting the head of Mike Edgecombe who lofted the ball over an advancing keeper. 4-1 to Old Suttonians and it was proving to be an entertaining game for the few spectators.

Molton tried to get back into the game, but Richard Marshall won the ball in midfield and smashed the ball from 30 yards into the far corner of the net. A goal to win any game!

With the game looking over, South Molton still playing some great stuff, pull 1 back. A long throw from the Right Back alludes the static defence to drop to the impressive Molton forward who calmly slots home making it 5-2.

Substitution for Old Sutts and Ashley Grieves replaced John Endacott. No sooner had he stepped onto the pitch he flicked a Paul Chivers cross over the head of the keeper and into the empty net.

The game ended 6-2 and Sutts progress into the next round. Credit must also go to the referee as he was outstanding, letting the game flow.

A good cup weekend for Old Sutts, as the 1st and 3rd team also won their games.
