Important Ruling affecting Girls' Centre of Excellence players:

8.1 Players are licensed in 3 categories as outlined below:

A International Football and The FA Centres of Excellence Programme

B All Schools Football

C Local Youth Leagues including County Representative Matches

Players registered with FA Centres of Excellence will be eligible to play in Category A football. They may be released to play in County FA and County Schools Under 16 representative competitions.

Players registered with FA Centres of Excellence shall not play in local youth leagues as it is expected that all girls will be participating in a full fixture programme.

Players NOT registered with a Centre of Excellence will play in Categories B and C only.

It will be the responsibility of the Director of the Centre of Excellence to monitor the number of games in which the player takes part.

The recommended number of games per season is 40. This number falls in line with the Long Term Player Development (LTPD) Strategy that the FA has embraced. This figure has been worked out based on these principles:

The average:
1. number of league, cup and international fixtures
2. length of the season
3. of one game per week

The conclusion and the recommendations based on LTPD guidelines is to prevent overuse, especially in young players, burn out and encourage longevity and greater practice to match ratios.

The Plymouth Centre is one of seven in the South West, including Somerset, Gloucestershire, Dorset, Cornwall, Wiltshire and Bristol.

The Centre structure in the South West has changed this season to fall in line with the national directive. Players are committing themselves to train on a more regular basis with a maximum of 3 sessions taking place on a number of weeks during the season.

Players will also be part of an increased fixture programme with a maximum of 20 fixtures being planned for. This has been designed to fit in with the FA’s Long Term Player Development (LTPD) Model, which it believes will give players the best chance to reach their potential.

The Plymouth Centre, along with the others in the region, has also recruited a U10 squad for the first time. This also falls in line with the FA’s LTPD Model with the view of it taking an athlete 10 years to excel in any given sport. The U10s will follow the same training and fixture schedule as the other 3 ages. This schedule includes a structured coaching programme incorporating technical skills, tactical understanding, strength & conditioning and psychological aspects to maximise player development.

The Plymouth Centre currently has 5 players who have either attended, or are on standby for, one of the national training camps this season. This is for the U15 and U17 squads. One of these players has 5 international caps to her name. We wish all the players well with their international careers.

With the recent changes and past success of the Plymouth Centre the future looks to be bright and exciting for female players in Devon.
